The bishops of CEAST have formally requested Pope Francis, at the conclusion of their visit “Ad Limina Apostolorum”, to create more dioceses in their territory.
According to Bishop Belmiro Tchissegueti CSSP, spokesperson of the Episcopal Conference (in photo), the territory is quite huge. The present dioceses are geographically very large and the size of the Christian communities keeps on growing such that this necessitates the creation of new dioceses.
Angola has 20 Dioceses, two of which are currently without a diocesan bishop. The last diocese to be created was the Diocese of Viana, with territory taken from the Archdiocese of Luanda.
At this moment it is not quite clear as to where the new dioceses will be created. Information gathered indicates that the former Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Petar Ragic, was supportive of the need to create more dioceses even though he did not indicate where the new demarcations would be.
